May I have someone other than myself pick up my packet?

No. Each participant must pickup their own race packet. We have packet pick up available both on Friday before the race as well as Saturday morning of the race. We have plenty of help at packet pick up on Saturday morning, so the lines (if there are any) are very short and move quickly. So if you can’t come personally to pick up your race packet on Friday – no worries. Packet pick up on Saturday – is quick and easy. The exception to this is if you are not going to be able to participate (see the question below).

 

I’m registered but will not be able to participate, can I have a friend pick up my race packet?

You may have a friend pick up your race packet if will not be able to participate. Your friend will need a copy of your photo ID along with a note from you stating that you would like them to pick up the race packet. Please realize there will not be much in that race packet. There will be no race bib(timing chip). Most of additional goodies (in years past – running hat, running socks, race bag) will be finishers items and be given at the finish line.

 

I’m not going to be able to participate, can I receive a refund or transfer my race bib to a friend?

No. We do not allow refunds or transfers.

 

Are there locations on the course that you recommend for spectators?

The start and finish area are really the only logical place for spectators to see the runners. Many of the roads which the runners are on are closed to vehicle traffic. With the course being in rural area there are not a lot of roads which access the course which are not part of the course. Plus, if spectators find a location on the course to watch from, they will have to locate a place to park which is another challenge. We are just not one of those big city races where your friends and family can walk a few blocks and see you pass 3 or 4 different times.

You can leave your friends and families on the town square to shop or possibly go over to the Jack Daniel’s Distillery to take the tour while you run.

Are the Start and Finish lines close to each other?

The start and finish lines are about 0.25 miles apart. Both of which are within a very short walk of Wiseman Park where you will be parking.

 

Where do the funds raised as a result of this race go?

The funds raised primarily go to pay for the race itself. Very nearly all of the race expenses (shirts, socks, hats, finishers medals, awards, timing, traffic control, port-a-potties, food, …) are paid for from the race entry fees. The remaining funds are split – a small portion is held back to reinvest in the equipment used for the race, the remaining profits are donated to local area charities. The charities vary from year to year. In the process of selecting the charities to receive part of the race profits, we try to find local charities where the donation that we are able to make will make a substantial impact on our local community. Some of the charities who have received donations from Oak Barrel in the past are – Honor Flight, Moore Care, Middle Tennessee Spay and Neuter Clinic, Moore County Volunteer Fire Department, Moore County Senior Citizens Center, Franklin County Humane Society, Moore County Friends of Animals, Bedford County Animal Control, and No Kill Manchester.

 

Who organizes this event?

The Oak Barrel Half is organized by the Mach Tenn Running Club. Mach Tenn is a small club that serves the southern middle Tennessee area which has been in existence more than 30 years. This running event is organized by runners for runners. We are not in this to make a huge profit (now we are not saying that we want to lose money on the event). We try very hard to make this event one that every runner wants to be a part of. Unlike some events, the Oak Barrel is not organized by a charity organization or business whos primary focus is to raise money for the organization. We are runners – our primary focus is the run!! OK, we admit it, some of the focus is the social part as well. This should be FUN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

 

Is Whiskey Hill really that steep?

Only you can answer that question for yourself. But we do organize Whiskey Hill preview runs every year. The preview runs typically take place every other weekend the two or so months prior to the race. We will announce the preview run schedule on the website and race facebook page in early January.
